Leveraging the Hype Cycle

How do you leverage the Gartner Hype Cycle?
For the past 7 or 8 years we’ve relied on the Hype Cycle to provide interesting, and often useful, information. Most of us refer to it to assess the progress of emerging technologies. And many of us leverage it to support our positions for or against a new technology. In my experience, its use has been pretty informal.
Today, Gartner’s Hype Cycle analysis is so well accepted and so often quoted that it can actually have an effect on the success of its subject and the velocity of acceptance. As a result, I believe the Hype Cycle can provide useful information to support strategic IT planning. Whether you tend to be an early adopter or more conservative, tracking the state of the cycle can help you make effective decisions. It can help you choose when (or if) to embrace a new technology by assessing its maturity and managing risk.
I’d be interested to know if you agree. Do you use the Hype Cycle as a planning tool – formally or informally – and how does it impact your planning and decision making?
